Marcy Repair for Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
92 among 142 herniorrhaphies which were performed at department of general surgery, Capital Armed Forces General Hospital during the past one year period from April 1982 to April 1983, have been reviewed.
1) The incidence of inguinal hernia among total cases operated in dept of surgery in the same period was 14.9%.
2) The side of inguinal hernia was on the right in 115 cases(81%), on the left in 24 cases (17%), and bilateral in 3 cases(2%). The type of inguinal hernia was the indirect in 140 cases(99%), and the direct in 2 cases(1.4%).
3) The symptoms and signs were inguinal mass in 30 cases(21.1%), scrotal enlargement in 112 cases(79%), obstruction sign in 8 cases, reducible mass in 138 cases(97.2%), protruding mass pain in 83 cases (58.4%).
4) The duration until treatment was 3 month in 39 cases(27.5%), 3 month to 6 month in 40 cases(28.2%), 6 month to 1 year in 23 cases(16.2%), 1 year to 3 year in 2 cases(1.4%), over 3 year in 19 cases(13.4%).
5) Associated disease was hydrocele in 20 cases(14.1%), undiscended testes in 5 cases (3.5%), and preoperative complication was incarceration in 4 cases(2.8%).
6) Spinal anesthesia was 124 cases(87.3%), general anesthesia in 17 cases(l2%), local anesthesia in 1 case(0.7%).
7) Selected operative procedure was Marcy procedure in 92 cases(64.8%), traditional procedure in 47 cases(33%), Shouldice in one Case(0.7%).
8) Postoperative complication was scrotal edema in 26 cases(18.3%), but 4 cases in Marcy procedure, wound infection in 2 cases(1.4%), hematoma in 3 cases(2.1%), phlebitis in 3 cases(2.1%), operative wound pain and traction pain were moderate to severe, but absence to minimal in Marcy procedure.
9) Loss of postoperative subjective symptoms and ambulatory period within 24 hour was 62 cases in Marcy operation. Running cases at 6th postoperative day in Marcy procedure was 39(42.4%).
10) Recurrence in Marcy procedure was absence.
